  • Unable to start service apache2: Job for apache2.service failed because the control process exited with error code - the three real causes and the Ansible playbook that shows you which one (reproduced on Ubuntu 24.04)

Unable to start service apache2: Job for apache2.service failed because the control process exited with error code - the three real causes and the Ansible playbook that shows you which one (reproduced on Ubuntu 24.04)

TL;DR The message is a relay, not a reason. Ansible's service module ran systemctl start apache2, systemd ran apachectl start, apachectl exited non-zero. The reason is in journalctl -u apache2 -n 20 on the target. Three causes cover almost every case: something else on port 80 (AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to …

Terraform concat strings, multiline strings and every string function - tested in terraform console (v1.16)

TL;DR To concatenate strings, use interpolation - "${var.app}-${var.env}" gave "Payments-API-prod". Use format() for a fixed pattern or padding, and join(",", list) for a list. concat() does not join strings. It merges lists; concat("payments", "-", "prod") …

How to use terraform depends_on meta argument?

The "depends_on" meta argument in Terraform is used to specify dependencies between resources within a Terraform configuration. This allows Terraform to properly order the creation, modification, and destruction of resources, ensuring that dependent resources are created or modified only after the resources …

fatal: destination path already exists and is not an empty directory - Ansible git module, 4 Fixes (and Proof That force=yes Is Not One of Them)

TL;DR The message is git's, not Ansible's. ansible.builtin.git runs git clone on the remote host, and git refuses to clone into a directory that already has files. The module reports it as FAILED! => {"cmd": "/usr/bin/git clone --origin origin <repo> <dest>", "msg": …

Terraform user_data on AWS EC2 - inline script, file(), templatefile(), the 16 KB limit, first-boot-only, and why a change recreates the instance (AWS provider 6.69)

TL;DR user_data is a string that EC2 passes to cloud-init on the instance's first boot. Start it with #!/bin/bash for a shell script or #cloud-config for cloud-init YAML; without a recognised first line nothing runs. Three ways to write it: inline with <<-EOT ... EOT, file("${path.module}/setup.sh") for …

Why you should not store terraform state file(.tfstate) inside Git Repository?

It is generally not recommended to commit .tfstate files to Git or any other version control system. .tfstate files contain sensitive information about the infrastructure managed by Terraform, including the current state of resources and the configurations used to create them. If these files are committed to version …
